made my way out to san francisco when i was a college student, and i sat in the class is in san francisco state as well, and i remember growing up at that time around clement street. we call the richmond district the new chinatown in the 1980's at that time. just being around the tremendous unique neighborhood, and discovering san francisco in the 1980's as i grew up, but i also have been very active as a community organizer. i worked in chinatown, and some first jobs also at the mental health center in the richmond area multi services in the 1980's, and i was also a staff are at the chinatown youth center -- i was also a staffer. a lot of my work has been supporting community empowerment, especially in an immigrant and people of color communities. most recently, i have been teaching at san francisco state. i ran the immigrant rights coalition in the city in the 1990's for several years. i'm also an immigration attorney, and a lot of my passion is supporting in power met for immigrant communities in the city as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor mar: a lot of

so this is san francisco's west portal neighborhood. the fire has been upgraded now it a three-alarm response. so there are a lot of news crews on scene and fire crews, as well. we just learned it's the squat and gobble reporter. flames are seen shooting from the roof. that's the address right there 9 west portal avenue. the closest cross street is uloa. west portal is shut down in the area. fortunately we are not hearing about any injuries. what is being impacted is muni possibly because it's right there by the west portal tunnel so inbounded and outbound service you could see delays. if there are delays it would impact the l line and k line across that stretch. so again we are sending our own crew to the scene. we'll let you know as soon as we get more information and live pictures. in the meantime we are following a major accident sounds like on freeways there in oakland. southbound 880 approaching 23rd. they just issued a traffic alert within the last few minutes. so you can see our speed sensors are slow across that stretch jammed

i've sold on the streets of new york and san francisco since i've been 15. without a permit, and with a permit. my troubles began in 2008. i was told by howard lazar, the director of the street artist program to call his number, 415-252-2583 to see if there was a quorum for a meeting. i did, and when i called that number some wom paeked up the phone and said paula you're going to jail or sing gospel music to me. i don't know. i was calling the city attorney's office and kathy barnes, thank god for her told me to follow up with a paper trail which i did. i sent an e-mail documenting this and never once got a response from anyone. i eventually got my permit back. there was no factual basis for it to be denied and at the appeals level i got it back. some time later, about a month later, i was arrested. i was accused of stalking someone at the arts commission who i never met at a date in time when i wasn't even in it san francisco. her name was evelyn russell, and apparent secretary there. this was the same woman who was picking up lazar's phone. i spent 45 days
